Carlos Miguel Prieto, conductor - CHAVEZ Sinfonia India, MONCAYO Huapango, SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 5 - First Tennessee Masterworks concert number two of the season features renowned Mexican conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto at the baton in an evening of music drawing from the cultural roots of each composer?s native land. Sinfon?a India is a one-movement work by Carlos Chavez drawing from the Mexican Indian culture of his native lands. Moncayo?s short orchestral fantasy, Huapango, follows. The evening culminates with the great Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich?s Symphony No. 5, at times referred to by its subtitle "A Soviet Artist's Response to Just Criticism."
